To go on fighting while there’s a fire? That’s absurd. Linda and Rick were close to losing their lives, trying to prove who was right and who was wrong. This is not a story about getting into a fight in inappropriate circumstances. Even when the situation is less extreme, the core of the issue is the same: pride. “I am right and you are wrong!”

Too often we see people fighting over small issues, although nothing really is at stake. But a string of small issues can, and usually do develop into a large problem. In all these situations, we need to understand that, in reality, the true war is a war of egos.

Our pride is like a fire. It starts as a tiny flame but, as it is fueled, it becomes a devouring fire. Once the battle of egos has begun, any retreat is considered a defeat. We think we must win the fight, even though we may actually lose everything else that really matters to us.

Once the war is over, we realize that the real loser is not our opponent, or the idea we are fighting for; we have become the loserEven if we had won, there would be nobody around any longer to celebrate the victory with.

The desire to be right is a powerful instinct, but can we control it? While you think about it, let me give you a tip: Every battle makes the victor stronger, so every battle that fuels the ego is worth losing.
